Lasik is a microsurgical procedure that uses an excimer laser to permanently reshape the clear cornea in the front of your eye, so that you can enjoy clear vision without glasses or contact lenses. To achieve a permanent result, the outermost protective layer of the cornea needs to be lifted out of the way, and then replaced. This "flap" heals without stitches. Anesthesia consists of eye drops only, and the surgery takes less than ten minutes. All laser vision correction procedures are performed in our Sandwich office.
Custom Lasik is an individualized laser vision correction for your eyes. Like your fingerprint, each eye has unique anatomic features that affect the focus. We can now measure these subtle imperfections and correct them with a Custom Laser procedure. Associated Eye Surgeons can offer you this new technology.
PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy) was the first procedure performed using the Excimer Laser. It corrects vision by reshaping the surface of the cornea. First, the epithelium, the thin outermost layer of clear tissue, is completely removed. The laser reshapes the cornea, and a bandage contact lens is placed over the eye for comfort and healing. The epithelium grows back in three to five days. The bandage contact lens is then removed.
Lasek is a Laser Vision procedure that combines both PRK and Lasik. Instead of removing the epithelium as with PRK, the epithelium is loosened and moved aside. . You are then treated with the laser and the epithelial tissue is replaced. A bandage contact lens is then placed over the eye for comfort and healing. The bandage contact lens is removed in three to five days.
